BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech was one of the first college athletics programs to pledge to pay the full cost of attendance for its scholarship athletes. In sports with full scholarships like football and basketball, the scholarship increase is simple addition, but in sports with partial scholarships, the math gets more complex. A new NCAA rule allows schools to increase athletes’ scholarships beyond tuition, books, and room and board, to cover the full cost of attendance, such as living expenses and trips home. In the final game of Beamer’s 29-season tenure as Virginia Tech head coach, the Hokies broke out for 598 yards of offense – a season high – in a 55-52 Independence Bowl win over Tulsa. The decline of the newspaper industry is continuing as analysts report that overall another 10.4 percent of newsroom jobs have been lost. Minority jobs in the industry have also fallen to a new low level. The study found that newspaper employment fell to 32, 900 in 2014 from 36, 700 in 2013.
